Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using the Travel & Geography Archive (the “Catalogue”), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, please do not use the Catalogue. These terms apply to all visitors, users, and others who access or use the Catalogue.

Use of the Catalogue

The Catalogue is provided for lawful, personal, and non-commercial purposes. You may browse, read, download, and share ebooks and accompanying editorial materials (such as reading notes, edition insights, and context guides) for personal enjoyment, study, or educational use. Any commercial use, republication, or redistribution of the content without prior written permission is prohibited. For example, you may download a copy of David goes to Greenland for your own reading, but you may not sell that copy or incorporate it into a paid product.

Prohibited Conduct

You may not:

• Use the Catalogue in any way that violates applicable law.
• Attempt to extract, scrape, or harvest content using automated tools, bots, or scripts without express permission. This includes systematic downloading of multiple ebooks or editorial pages.
• Interfere with the operation of the Catalogue, including overloading servers or disrupting access for other users.
• Reproduce, sell, or distribute the content for commercial gain.
• Modify, adapt, or create derivative works from the Catalogue’s editorial materials without attribution or permission, except as allowed under the Creative Commons license.
• Use the Catalogue in a manner that infringes the rights of any third party.

Content and Copyright

The ebooks in the Catalogue are drawn from sources believed to be in the public domain in many jurisdictions. However, copyright laws vary by country. Some works may still be protected in certain regions. It is your responsibility to verify the legal status of any ebook before using it in a way that may require permission. For instance, a work like Travels in Western Africa in 1845 & 1846 may be public domain in Canada but still under copyright in some other countries. The editorial notes, reading guides, and other original materials added by the Catalogue Editor are provided under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License unless otherwise noted. This license allows you to share and adapt the editorial content for non-commercial purposes, provided you give appropriate credit. For example, you may quote from the reading companion for Korea and her neighbors in a non-commercial blog post, as long as you attribute the Catalogue Editor.

Accuracy and Limitations

The Catalogue is curated by a single editor and may contain typographical errors, transcription inaccuracies, or incomplete bibliographic information. Editorial commentary reflects personal interpretation and should not be taken as definitive scholarship. The Catalogue does not guarantee that every work is complete, accurate, or suitable for any particular purpose. Readers are encouraged to consult original sources or scholarly editions for critical research. For example, the edition insights for Twenty years around the world are intended to enhance your reading experience, not to replace academic study.

Third-Party Links

The Catalogue may include links to external websites for reference or convenience. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy, or privacy practices of those sites. Accessing them is at your own risk. The inclusion of a link does not imply endorsement. For instance, a link to a historical society page about The Japan expedition is provided for additional context, but we do not control that site.

Availability and Modifications

We strive to keep the Catalogue accessible, but do not guarantee uninterrupted availability. We reserve the right to suspend, modify, or discontinue any part of the Catalogue at any time without notice. We may also update these Terms of Use; continued use after changes constitutes acceptance. It is your responsibility to review the Terms periodically. For example, we may remove a title like A Modern Slavery if its legal status becomes uncertain.

Disclaimer of Warranties

The Catalogue and its content are provided “as is” without any warranty, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. The entire risk arising from use of the Catalogue remains with you. No warranty is given that the ebooks are error-free or that they are in the public domain in your location.

Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Catalogue Editor and any persons involved in creating or maintaining the Catalogue shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of or inability to use the Catalogue, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. This includes, but is not limited to, damages for loss of profits, data, or other intangible losses.

Abusive Access

We reserve the right to block or suspend access to any user or IP address that engages in abusive behavior, including automated scraping, repeated downloading that burdens the server, or any activity that violates these terms. For example, downloading hundreds of files in a short period may trigger a temporary block.

Rights Holder Notices

If you believe that any content in the Catalogue infringes your copyright or other rights, please contact the Catalogue Editor at editor@unwen.com with details, and we will promptly review and address the matter. Please include sufficient information to identify the work and the nature of the alleged infringement. We take such notices seriously and will respond appropriately.

Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.

Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada, without regard to its conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Catalogue shall be resolved exclusively in the courts of Ontario.

These Terms of Use are designed to protect the integrity of the Catalogue and the rights of its users and contributors. Thank you for respecting them.
